Pancakes by Ryan Connolly 2001
My Aunt Kirby shared this with me years ago & you know I thought it was so wonderful I had to have a copy. We thought of it last week & went on a search to find it. If you have not read this before, I hope you enjoy it! I think it is so special!
With fog like smoke from the burning of wet wood,
And we all ate breakfast together.
Then, when Jeff left for school and dad headed off to work,
I ventured downstairs where action figures
Saved the world under my supervision
While you were cleaning messes I left for you.
That lazy sun eventually came up over the mountain and burned off the fog.
Warming the air on the eastern side of the house.
The aroma of pancakes stopped World War III and drew me to the kitchen.
Amazing yet effortless motions shaped batter into a Mickey Mouse head
And you placed the cherry for his nose as I sat down to eat.
You as only a mother can as I finished my second breakfast.
Off to save the world again I would go, and you cleaned up.
But now a cold silver walker lies motionless beside your bed.
Making Mickey Mouse pancakes isn't our routine anymore
And cleaning the house is an event, not an everyday chore.
But you wear a smile on your face and in your heart all the same.
We eat breakfast together, when I am home,
And that fog still sits heavy in the little valley,
But coffee and cereal take the place of pancakes and milk.
You sit and watch, while I eat.
